2008 Republican Convention Day 3–Sarah Palin, The Second Coming of Margaret Thatcher

Wow!

Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow!

Wow.

Lady Thatcher, your legacy shall be continued, and her name is Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, the next Vice President of the United States.

The democratic party is now in a state of either denial or full blown panic. With all due respect to Evander Holyfield, Sarah Palin is the real deal.

The emotions in the luxury box I was in at the XCEL Center were a mixture of elation and jubilation. Grown professional women were crying the moment she entered the room. The glass ceiling has not been broken. It has been shattered into thousands of tiny pieces.

Most importantly, it was shattered by somebody who is qualified for the job. The meritocracy that is America lives on and shines bright in this woman.

My only worry before her speech is that nobody should be forced to speak after Rudy Giuliani. He remains perhaps the greatest executive to ever lead a city, and he had the crowd fired up.

Then Sarah Palin walked in, and the electricity nearly blew the fuses.

Some of her remarks are below. They may have a shelf life of 1000 years.

“John McCain refused to hedge his bets on a war to free people from an enemy of America.”

“Pundits and pollsters who wrote him off overlooked one thing…the caliber of the man.”

“After 22 years of service, he refused to break with the troops. A the mom of one of the troops, that’s the man I want as commander in Chief.”

“On the outside, families seem typical. We are.”

“For families with special needs children, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House.”

“This is America. Every woman can walk through every door of opportunity.”

“My opponent takes issue with my small town. We grow good people in these small towns. These people grow food, run our factories, fight our wars, love our country in good times and bad, and are always proud of America.”

“The difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull…lipstick.”

“When I ran for city council I didn’t need focus groups or polls. I knew these people and their families.”

“For those who don’t understand what a small town Mayor does, let me tell you what the job entails. A small town Mayor is like a community organizer, except with actual responsibilities.”

“John McCain does not talk differently to people in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and San Francisco. Wherever he goes, John McCain is the same man.”

“I’m not a member in good standing with the Washington elite. According to them, that is a disqualification for me alone. News flash…I am not going to Washington to seek their opinion. I am going to Washington to serve the people of this country.”

“The Alaska luxury jet…I sold it on Ebay.”

“The state budget is under control. We have a surplus.”

“I told Congress thanks but no thanks on the bridge to nowhere.”

“As for oil and gas, take it from a girl that knows the north slope. We’ve got lots of both.”

“Drilling will not solve everything, but that is no excuse not to do anything at all.”

“Our opponent has two memoirs, but not one law or reform. His war speeches never mention victory except when he is talking about his own campaign.”

“What is his plan after pushing back the waters and healing the planet? To grow the government and reduce American strength.’

“Victory in Iraq is in sight. He wants to forfeit.”

“Al Queda wants to end America. He worries someone won’t read them their rights.”

“Barack Obama wants to promote change to advance his career. John McCain promotes his career to advance change.”

“Some people talk about great things. Leaders like John McCain actually do great things.”

“John McCain is not looking for a fight, but he’s sure not afraid of one.”

“Harry Reid said that he cannot stand John McCain. No accolade is better proof that we chose the right man. Maybe what he was driving at was that he cannot stand up to John McCain.”

“The Presidency is not a journey of self discovery.”

“The world of threats is not a community, and it doesn’t need an organizer.”

“Only one man in this election ever really fought for you in places where winning is survival and defeat is death.”

“It’s a long way from a six foot cell in Hanoi to the Oval Office.”

“There is a special confidence of those who have seen evil, and overcome it.”

“For a season, one can inspire with words. For a lifetime, John McCain inspires with his deeds.”

After the speech, I remarked that Sarah Palin is not only the second coming of Lady Thatcher, but that she had more testosterone (the actual word was less dignified) than the entire democratic party.

A woman heard me and mentioned that she also had more of it than most of the republican party as well.

Sarah Palin is right about another thing. The left despises her. The attempts to destroy her continued moments after she finished speaking. The National Organization For Women has proven again that they only care about liberal women.

So what are the downsides to Sarah Palin? Well for one, her husband is not me.

Second of all, getting a face to face interview with her became next to impossible after she was selected to be on the ticket.

Third of all…see number one.

She may not be the Iron Lady, and she may not be Michael Steele, but steel is what her nerves are made of, to go with her razor sharp tongue and lightning quick mind.

I have not been this excited since George W. Bush put the world’s terrorists and media critics on notice with three words. Those three words apply to any leftist that thinks that they have what it takes to match up with her. Those words apply to factions of the left, from the smug elitists to the vicious smear merchants.

Those three words leave me emboldened as I race to embrace the ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin.

In the immortal words of the Dub…

BRING IT ON.

Sounds like your having a great time, thats wonderfl and keep up the great work here, it’s nice to see regular folk on the screen as opposed to a convention that looks like the Academy Awards after party.

  2. “Some of her remarks are below…”

Her remarks? Don’t you mean the McCain campaign aides remarks?

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/postpartisan/2008/09/putting_words_in_palins_mouth.html

She didn’t write any of that that speech.

    I don’t think she could.

I’m sorry, but I found that speech nothing but a steaming pile of cheap shots, partisan jabs, and conservative code cliches. Utterly substanceless. She was an extermely irresponsible choice for the veep of a 71 year-old presidential candidate, pure political cynicism directed at those few angry Clinton supporters dumb enough to vote against their own interests just to see a woman in higher office. She reminds me of the Janine Pierro debacle in the ’06 NY snetae race – utterly unqualified, devoid of competence, experience and intellect. I think she’s a bad joke.

First of all jersey you need to realize that you insult the rights intelligence when you refer us to a leftist rag loke the Washington post for information.
They may say that the speech was written ahead of time and then revised only at the last minute because they had no idea up untill a few days before the pick who it would be.
    Thats BS

Ridge, Pawlenty, Roney. Palin were all being considered by Mccain for weeks now. This comes from McCains staff itself.
Palin actually turned out to be the safest pick and final vetting teams were sent to Alaska 3 days before the announcement.
When McCain heard of the pregnancy and the 22 year old DUI rap he said that it was no more relevant than Obama confessing to doing some “BLOW” when he was younger.

As far as who wrote the speech goes, you got a lot of irresonsable nerve saying that it was a pile of cheap shots when the article at the post is rife with innacurate and cheap shots.
In the article the author says that they all of a sudden had to re write a speech that had been prepared for weeks in advance.
C’mon, use your head. Listen to the speech.
It was tailor made for her.
The comparisons of her experience next to Obamas, the list of accomplishments, what her goals are, what qualifies her to fullfil the duties etc..

Do you have a thing for cow boobs ?
Anything that hits home and is true with you is always “utterly” this and “utterly ” that.
Seriously, it was not anything but a great speech, well written and full of substance that excited America and took the wind out of Obamas sails so badly to the point that the only way he can get back on the radar screen now is to finally appear on OReilly.

“utterly unqualified, devoid of competence, experience and intellect. I think she’s a bad joke.’

That statement is just something born of a hateful duty(so whats new, right ?) and you’re sayin it because it makes you feel good to say it. But the facts in contrast to that statement make it only apparent that nothing could be further from the truth.
Every news outlet on TV said it was a wonderful speech that hit home on many issues.
Surprise ! Only MSNBC/Oberman could not find the decency to afford the woman the credit she deserves

Her competence has been proven as she is and has been the most popular and effective governor in our country, with an approval of 83% before most people knew who she was.
She has an 8 year track record of competence, 2 of those years as Governor.

    Qualified ?
    Yes !
She has the knowledge that it takes to operate in an executive capacity.
As a mayor and a governor she has attained the skills to be #2 since he requirements are much the same, only on a larger scale.

And questioning her intellect leaves me no question about yours.

Too bad, what you call “cheap shots” were actually T R U E !!!

“She didn’t write any of that that speech.

    I don’t think she could.”

    Oh, by the way.
Her teleprompter went down, the replacement scrolled too fast, and she ad libbed a good portion of that speech.
She was missing the first two lines of everything.
And also ended up using an older draft instead ofthe final polished version.
In other words, things were all screwed up and she put out one of the besr speechs this country has heard in a long time.
Even Biden said it was an excelent speech and complained that she left out healthcare and college tuitions.
He also mentioned that she will be a formidable opponent.

Just goes to show, what you know and think are usually two different things

  6. Laree says:

She’s going to take down names and kick ass. Oh she already started.

“First of all jersey you need to realize that you insult the rights intelligence when you refer us to a leftist rag loke the Washington post for information.”

I guarentee you, Micky, that just about every pol, pundit, and rightwing intellectual you like reads the Post at least once a week.

“They may say that the speech was written ahead of time and then revised only at the last minute because they had no idea up untill a few days before the pick who it would be.
    Thats BS”

Micky, it’s all over the news and the web. It was written by a GWB speechwriter, which may explain it’s lack of literary skill (“good opinion”???).

“The speech was written by Matthew Scully, who met Palin for the first time last week.” – http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003845788

” guarentee you, Micky, that just about every pol, pundit, and rightwing intellectual you like reads the Post at least once a week.”

    Oh ! You’re absolutly right.
    That doesnt mean its gospel.
And if I want to know what the slanderous left is up to thats where I go.

Unfortunatly you didnt watch enough of FOX to get the complete story as I mentioned in my first response to you.
Shep Smith and Brit Hume both reported the same facts that I mentioned.

Of course once again your post is about as thick in substance as onion skin and full of the gratuitous and obligatory GWB bash which does not prove your points or assertions.
Who wrote the speech matters aboutas much as who wrote all of Obamas which does not prove your points or assertions.

If your biggest beef with her is about her speech and who did or didnt write it and how well then its actually you who will giving yhourself a pedicure with your own teeth.

You cannot refute Bidens complimenting her speech ontop of the majority of the left who thoought it was well written and dekivered.
but, the fact remains that as much as you childishly keep saying that it was prepared and she didnt write it and bla bla bla you cannot refute that she had to use an original copy that someone had pulled out of their vest pocket. That was downloaded into a new prompter because the old one failed. The new prompter was acting up so that she was consistanly missing the two top lines constantly and ended up having to as lib.

    THOSE ARE THE FACTS !!!

    http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/09/04/palin-overcame-teleprompter-problems-missing-hard-copies/

Sarah Palin electrified the Republican convention Wednesday, all the while reading off a faulty teleprompter and an outdated draft, John McCain officials told FOX News on Thursday.

The Alaska governor overcame several glitches and technical problems to deliver her speech without getting flustered, impressing McCain and his staff and allowing them to breathe a sigh of relief.

Foremost of the obstacles, Palin’s teleprompter was not working properly. When she took the podium, the machine rolled so quickly, it often skipped the first line or two of every paragraph on screen. The operator said he had new equipment and wasn’t sure how it would work.

However, Palin also went on stage with a slightly outdated hard copy of her speech. For various unexplained reasons, she and her closest advisers had an old draft on hand, and even had a hard time furnishing one of those for her to use. Several of the drafts were scribbled on, so one aide gave Palin a wrinkled, folded copy out of his pocket.

Officials said Palin responded in mom-like fashion, concluding, “Well, I suppose I could put a book on it and smooth it out a little. “

During one part of her speech, she couldn’t see the teleprompter because signs were blocking it. That was when she ad-libbed a line about the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull — “lipstick.”

While you’re still flapping away about who wrote it and all of whatever that doesnt matter, this is whats been happeni9ng, and happened.

So what if Scully only just met her ????

That has absolutley nothing to do with the fact that McCain has had her in his sights along with others for months now.
Why intoduce the speech writter to the candidate untill you know who the pick is ??? HUH ???

Pleese, you seem to forget who you’re dealing with.
You can fly your unsubstantial spin and refuse over at the KOS where they buy into that kinda thing.
But dont insult my intelligence anymore with this high school level caliber arguements

  10. timbudd says:

holy crap a politician utilized the help of a speechwriter! OMG!
now, I have to watch my west wing dvds, I love that character Rob Lowe plays … hey, wait a sec ….

  11. The trouble with the speech was that she didn’t lay out anything of substance about Palin herself. The speech really had nothing whatsoever to do with her. It’s not that she had a speechwriter, it’s that the speechwriter didn’t even know for whom he was writing! Doesn’t the GOP care about their own VP nominee? Or do they figure, “Hey, whatever, we’re running against a black man named Obama – why should we care? We’ll just use her like a marionette should she ever move up that one big step!”

She may have “wowed” the GOPers (pro-wrestlers have been known to do that too), but I doubt she did much to sway independents and Hillary swing-voters. This was her first big chance to showcase herself and all she did was read a prompt – no less but from a GWB hack – filled with GOP soundbytes, cliches, stump repititions and cheap shots. I was more impressed with a poodle I saw on a recent episode of Pet Star. All she did was run through a little doggy course. She could have at least barked along to Swan Lake. That takes skill. Reading a GWB speech only takes a human beginner’s understanding of the English language.

The thought this rank amateur could too soon be president of the United States is frightening, and not just for the country (which is bad enough) but also should be for herself. If she were to take the reins of the executive with her current skill level, she’d be impeached within months as her staff would likely run amok! Maybe the GOP is grooming her for the future – what with her mix of conservatism and populism – but that speech did nothing at all to get her started. I think the speech was an abject failure for that reason alone. She could have done a lot better. I mean that. I take back what I said before, with apologies – she could have done a lot better if she’d written the speech herself.

  12. parrothead says:

Similar things were said about our “least qualified” President and Abe Lincoln turned out okay. George H. W. Bush was probably the most qualified and few would consider him one of our best presidents. So “qualifications” mean little.

I am so sick of this who is qualified for the office crap on both sides. No experience truly prepares anybody for the oval office. Last I checked there were 2 qualifications for President. 1) Being 35 years of age, and 2) being a natural born citizen. (I am not counting the all important winning the majority of electoral votes as Gerald Ford defied that one). Based on that Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Lantos and Eric (our erstwhile host is too young) are NOT qualified to be president. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, John McCain, Sarah Palin and I all are. I suspect Jersey and Micky are as well but I cannot say for sure.

Jersey your rants are beneath you. You don’t have any REAL evidence to support that Sarah Palin is a complete moron, you just figure she must be becasue she is a Repblican. Biden’s certainly has more blemishes to question his intelligence than Sarah Palin, but I wouldn’t call him an idiot either .

She didn’t write any of that that speech.
    I don’t think she could.”

    You see.
Now you’re full of it and trying to wiggle out of it.
Because as I showed above that was the original base of yourr argument.
You even included a link from the Wash. Post to drive that point.

Unfortunatly once again all you’re doing is spouting hateful opinion.
You have nothing but hatred to back up any of your claims.

The speech had nothing to do with her ?
    Thats a lie.
A lie. You are lying just to sound as if you have a point.

She wowed quite few dems also. and the blogs i post on have a majority of libs and dems that say that was all it took to get them over the hump.

To have your hatred for the right is one thing.
But you lack any real examples of the failure on her part that you talk about

“but that speech did nothing at all to get her started. ”

    Another lie.
It shot her to the moon by all respected opinions out there.
Once again you’re just saying crap cuz it makes you feel good.
And you keep dwelling on how she could of done better if she wrote the speech hersel after you said it doesnt matter and I showed you poroof that most of it was not written by anyone.
    Also.
You have not been able to refute or counter any of the points I made

“You cannot refute Bidens complimenting her speech ontop of the majority of the left who thoought it was well written and dekivered.”

“Too bad, what you call “cheap shots” were actually T R U E !!!

When I already made it clear to yo0u twice what happened.

    Really.
Yor argument is weak , naive rated at the intellect of a 13 year old
    .
You just sound like a bitter little kid who lost his marbles.

When Parrothead says your rants are beneath you, I beg to differ.
And I know if I pointed out the difference it would get pulled out.
Parrot is giving you way more credit than you deserve.

I guess the simple explanation is that Palin hit a home run and you cant stand it.
You probably expected her to get up there and take a huge dive.
Or do what Obama does and say “Uhhh” or “Uhmm” every 5 seconds
A lot of very intelligent people out there are saying its over for you guys.

Trust me, its not too far of a stretch
Changed the landscape out there overnight.
    Obamanites are freaking out.

In closing I’ll just concure with Parothead.
You have nothing to prove that Sarah Palin is the moron you say she is.

    Oh and by the way.

    {{{ PET STAR}}} ?????

    That explains a lot

  14. Parrot, Lincoln spoke for himself and did a d@mned fine job of it. You guys haven’t had a man like that since TR. That was a looooooooooooooooooooong time ago.

Micky, she practiced that speech up the wazoo. She may be “Thatcher” for all I know, but then I don’t know it and neither do you (unless, of course, you happen to be an Alaskan from a very small, particular town).

    JMJ

  15. Micky 2 says:

Also, she got more television viewers than any night of any GOP convention in history.

She was just 1.1 million viewers under Obama’s audience of 38.3 million.

She drew in this audience while her speech was covered on only six TV networks. Obama was carried by ten.

Not bad for some nobody that jersey called a whore just a few days ago ?

  16. “Also, she got more television viewers than any night of any GOP convention in history.”

It just goes to show that GOP voters don’t pay much attention to the issues at hand.

You guys don’t care about issues, stories, or views – you only care about ideological ageement.

    Pathetic.

    JMJ

  17. Micky 2 says:

“It just goes to show that GOP voters don’t pay much attention to the issues at hand.’

Once again you dodge the issue at hand and obfuscate to something irrelevant to the point.

But while you bring it up i must say that issues like global warming, giving terrorists rights, saving trees instead of people, whether or not gays can say they’re married or if its PC to call an illegal alien “illegal” dont concern us.

Of course the statement itself is a blatent outright childish lie.
Be nice if you could make point once in a while without lying.

It goes to show that a woman whom you so lovingly called a “whore”, utterly unqualified, devoid of competence, experience and intellect.
Compared her to a pro wrestler(those guys are actually not pros), Said a dog was more inpressive than her, a rank amateur actually drew a larger audience than Obama who has H U G E name reckognition RIGHT ???

Rolling on the floor laughing my a$$ off !

God you are so full of it , and soooo disengenuous to the point that you are a liar by intentionally omitting the facts I pointed out about the speech earlier.
It doesnt matter if she practiced it for a year. she had to as lib half of it due to the problems I showed you.

AND SO WHAT IF SHE DID PRACTICE IT ????
Every candidate practices their speeches and has them written for them !!!!!!

So knock off your spin BS.
All your doing is repeating statements that have been refuted , counterd and put to rest already.
    Which means you got N O T H I N G when you have to do that.

Many Republican Senators come off similarly. He barely can get through 2-3 sentences without a umm, uhh or an er.

    Excerpt:
    Palin knows energy, says IBD.

She’s already figured out how to deliver energy to the U.S. without Congress — by championing state legislation to create a 1,712-mile natural gas pipeline across Canada to the U.S.

It was a major feat, negotiating with the Canadian government, educating lawmakers and getting the public behind her. In a decade, the $30 billion project will ship 4.5 million cubic feet of gas a day from the North Slope to Houston’s air conditioners, Iowa’s farm machines and Boston’s winter furnaces.

This is the kind of leadership the U.S. needs, says IBDs editorial board.

Not only will getting serious about Alaska help the economy, it will also help our allies in Europe and the Far East whose economies are severely battered by high energy prices and who are seeing some of the most direct threats from the petro-tyrants.

Choosing Palin shows John McCain is serious about energy, says IBD.

Putting myself in JMJ’s moccasins, I would probably react the same way to Governor Palin’s speech, etc. I would be very uncomfortable, and would find someway to convince myself that she is no threat to me.

I, however, am a fan of reality. The reality here is, the speech rocked. No merely coached speech giver could have done as well as she did – note, Cindy McCain, who WAS thoroughly coached, it being her FIRST time out as a speaker…and on national television no less. If you contrast the two, the Governor obviously has some skills. Obama has some skills along the same line. Reality.

More reality: it was a speech that could have partly been given by Ann Coulter, pointing out the obvious with biting wit. Ann Coulter does not win everyone with her rhetoric. On the flip side: Governor Palin didn’t say a thing that wasn’t true Those of us who stand for what she does, were happy to have someone give back in kind to the ridicule and misrepresentation we have had to put up with for too long, in our attempts to treat the opposition with respect.

And on and on; she absolutely talked about all she needed to say about herself, she talked about her accomplishments, her family, and unless you were not listening, you got a very clear picture of what she will accomplish in Washington. She put the media critics in their place by not deigning to address any of the slime they threw on her. Sarah Palin is a class act, which thoroughly belies the MSM template for hillbilly conservatives, no matter how hard they try to fit her in it.

The reality of Sarah Palin finally ends my attempts to fit myself in the democrat world in an attempt to find reality there. The bottom line is; Palin and McCain bring a history of walking out, and LIVING their campaign rhetoric. These are realities we can STAND on when voting for the hope of their promise for change and reform. On the other side, despite their rhetoric, there is nothing I can stand on to believe and support the Obama/Biden ‘promises’ of ‘hope’ for ‘change’, except a history of supporting ideas that in reality, never work.

I am proud to support John McCain and Sarah Palin for change you can TRULY believe in.
