Happy Hannukkah Eric,

I intended to post this in the previous thread:

The interesting element of the Caroline Kennedy appointment is the extent to which Patterson was willing to bow before the explicit pressure from Ted Kennedy, with the apparent implicit support of Obama. If one was completely cynical, one could say that the difference between Blajovech and Patterson is that the latter didn't have the temerity to question Obama's "right" to appoint the Senator.

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with what Obama is doing, after all the governor has the right to refuse Obama's request, but it does undermine the ludicrous claim that there was no contact between Blago and the Administration (though obviously Obama was not involved in any of the illegal things that Blajovech was involved with.)

I've never lived in New York, but I'd have thought that if Obama really was serious about being 'post-partisan' (which of course he isn't), he should have suggested that Paterson appoint an independent-minded Democrat, such as Ed Koch. He's more qualified than any of the other candidates and as he's 84 years old, Koch would probably have served only two years, allowing Kennedy/Cuomo/Lowery to fight it out in 2010.

I'm obviously not surprised that he's not on Patterson's shortlist, but I'm surprised that no-one in the press mentioned Koch, who supported Obama in the election.
