Jersey, I agree with some of your recommendations - but I obviously take exception to the Military Welfare State and the Health Industry. The latter could benefit from a reduction of lawsuits - the former isn't something we can resolve in one thread. The military is stretched...and many conservatives believe we need to grow it while others believe we simply need to quit being in wars...ok...send me home...but some of these guys are like a bad fart and will follow me home... Boo! OK, so it's almost Halloween, and you don't respond to scare tactics! :>)
Good comment Eric! I hadn't thought of his firing...
All the craziness in this campaign should be easy to dispel with a few simple questions:
Abortion
More Gun Control
Refunds for people who don't pay Fed Income Taxes
Oil Drilling
Government provided or independent health care
Maintain stabilization in Iraq or come home ASAP
The above are the issues...issues can be debated sensibly. Look at the topics, determine where your priorities are, and vote accordingly. Unfortunately, some don't care about the issues because they won't vote for a Black guy...others don't care about the issues and will vote for a Black guy regardless... It's going to be a fun few weeks...especially a week or so after the election... I hope to be home during that time, and I'll likely need my body armor in the US!!

"Obama claimed he was against the war from the beginning, and now embraces the man that sold the rationale for war."

You said it for me.
How these two have avoided not being asked about this so far is no mystery.

I will not be covering the Colin Powell endorsement. It's a non-story. I can sum it up right here.

George W. Bush fired him. This is payback. The timing is for maximum effect, coupled with the Jayson Blair Times savaging Cindy McCain.

Powell had a distinguished career, but this is just petulance from a disgruntled fired ex-employee. When he says he does not like the "direction," of the Republican Party, what he means is that the direction did not include him.

Obama claimed he was against the war from the beginning, and now embraces the man that sold the rationale for war. Also, perhaps Powell got tired of being seen as "white." This helps redeem him.

Well Eagle, in some ways I think we are laughing at the same thing. I think McCain's whole problem here, contrary to what he's said before, is that he's not pi$$ing anyone off. He's not saying the hard things that people need to hear. It's easy to say the everything is going to be fine, or all we have to do is cut off earmarking, U-S-A, U-S-A, rah, rah, rah, bla, bla, bla. It's another thing to say that we need some very serious major changes in the way we do things in America. We need to do things that run contrary to what mainstream conservatives have been saying for years. We need massive infrastructural and institutional investment, we need to downsize the ridiculous military welfare state, we need to scale way back on the prison industrial complex, we need to pu some tax on the 75% of all income gains accrued by only 1% of the population during the Bush/GOP years - a very powerful 1% of the population, we need t orealize that the healthcare system is a faliure and that's why we're the only country stupid enough to utilize such a failed system, and on and on. A lot of people just don't want to hear it. They can't face that laizzez faire, militaristic, police state, theocratic authoritarianism is a failure. A proven, complete and absolute failure in every sense.

Looks like a certain Colin Powell is man enough to admit this.

I admire that. But it does make me laugh. I mean, what the #@!! took him so long?

Wow...two agreements in one thread, Jersey! Of course, I'm not sure whether we are laughing for the same reason. I didn't laugh at his endorsement, but I laughed at his reasoning. I never worked for him, but I respect his accomplishments. I used to have one of his "top ten" phrases hung in my office, "Being responsible means sometimes pi>>ing people off". For him to say McCain looked shaky on the economy was funny - anyone over 70 looks shaky - as do Type A personalities - they are more comfortable doing something than posturing how things should be done...
